3D Printing Head for CNC/3D systems

All of the STEPCRAFT machines can be configured to 3D printer mode! Take advantage of the modular design and simply swap the Proxxon spindle (or other) adaptor from the 43mm mounting collar on the machine, and put the 3D printer module in instead.

STEPCRAFT 3D printer operation

The STEPCRAFT 3D printer uses an extruding system to push a 1.75 mm PLA, ABS or HIPS plastic filament through a heated nozzle. The machine moves the nozzle to print a plastic layer. The layers must be generated by specific 3D printer software that is provided with the STEPCRAFT 3D printing system

What do you need to use your STEPCRAFT as a 3D printer?

You will need the STEPCRAFT 3D printer tool as shown in the image. This consists of the 3D print head that sits in the 43 mm collar of any of the STEPCRAFT machines, and the thermal controller and spool mount for the plastic PLA/ABS/HIPS material. You will also need the Slicing software (that comes with the STEPCRAFT 3D printer package) and a Gcode based machine controller (WinPC USB full version, Mach3 or other).

What software do I need to use the STEPCRAFT 3D printer?

The STEPCRAFT 3D printer comes with its own “slicer software”. The software can be used to import 3D files (in STL format). The 3D file is then sliced into layers and toolpaths are generated to allow the machine to reproduce the 3D part – layer – by layer. The output from the slicer software is 4 axis Gcode. Therefore you will require a full machine controller / Gcode interpreter to use the system. WinPC USB full version, Mach3 or other software.

How does the STEPCRAFT 3D printer work?

The STEPCRAFT 3D printing system feeds a filament of 1.75 mm PLA plastic through a brass nozzle that has been heated to the melting point of the plastic. The machine is used to move the nozzle to where the plastic is needed. Typically 2D layers are built up in stages using the printing nozzle until your 3D part is finished.

Air regulation for extraction

The air regulation for the extraction consists of a two-parts adapter with which the intensity of the extraction can be easily adjustes. The extraction tube is being connected to one side while an e. g. vacuum cleaner is being attached to the other side of the device. With its conical construction it is suitable for all commercially available models. Adjust the air quantity on the nozzle by slightly twisting the air regulation and the work piece stays where it should

Thus, it enables an automatic, comfortable and complex processing of complicated workpieces. Ideal for workpieces in small batch series

The assembly is very easy: The  Tool Change Attachment is being tightend onto the spindle shaft which in turn is then being inserted into the 43 mm collar

The tool is kept in a clamping system of an SK10 tool holder. This is being held in a draw-in collet using spring power and pneumatically released. The Tool Change Attachment contains an integrated sealing air which prevents the ingress of dust into its bearing and extents the life of the product

The electronics module for the Tool Changer incl. peumatic valve is completely pre-assembled and needs only to be inserted into the Switch-Box

Note: The control software WinPC-NC Starter does not support the configuration of the Automatic Tool Changer

The exhaustion is constructed as a ring nozzle, which encompasses the milling cutter completely and reliably extracts the dust. The detachable ring nozzle enables the change of a tool while the exhaust adapter is attached. The mounted cup brush provides a good sealing towards the workpiece and recedes with its clamping bars in the case of contact

The enclosed tube can be connected to an e. g. commercially available vacuum cleaner

Exhaust adapter Proxxon

The Exhaust Adapter is designed to remove dust from your work piece using a standard shop vac that you can find from most home improvement and department stores

It is designed to work with the Dremel (models: 2000, 3000, 4000 and 4200) as well as the Proxxon IBS/E

SAFETY NOTE: It can be very dangerous to breath in the dust of some materials, especially carbon fiber, so please take care that the area that you use your Stepcraft machine is well ventilated and you have adequate dust collection
